Iowa City, Iowa Farmers Market
 

The one nearest to our home is on the bottom level of the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp just off of the corner of College and Gilbert in Iowa City. 

It is the undoubtedly busiest one that I've been to here in town and usually has the greatest number of vendors.  All the usual produce is there; tomatoes, onions, beans, peas and also flowers, some meats and home crafts.  Live music in also featured in the adjoining park.  The person to contact for more information is Tammy Newmann and she can be reached at (319) 356-5110.  The market goes from May until October and is on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  They accept WIC coupons.

Sycamore Mall Farmers Market

The other market that I frequent here in Iowa City is the one that is held at the Sycamore Mall parking lot just off of Highway 6 & Sycamore Street.  Again, it's the usual products though there seems to be a few more vendors there with different products to showcase besides the usual "onion and potato" Anabaptist crowd that saturate the downtown scene.  The person to contact for the Sycamore Mall market is Candy Norris and she can be reached at (319) 338-6111.  You can attend this market on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.  They also accept WIC coupons.

This year I'd like to apply with City Hall here in Iowa City for a permit to sell my peppers at the local farmers markets.  It's doubtful I'll get a spot at Chauncey Swan so I'm hoping for a crack at the market on Dodge St. (more about this particular farmers market later) which is located at the Ace Hardware parking lot and is a little less competitive. 

The photo that you see above is part of an area on our roof that is absolutely ideal for the growing of hot peppers (direct all-day sun with no wind).  This year I plan on tripling the amount of containers.  I figure if I can't sell all of my produce at the farmers market I can try to sell them at the Asian or Mexican grocery stores here in Iowa City.
